Repeated Reading
Repeated Reading is a strategy that is effective in helping build students' fluency. In particular, singing assists fluency in some cases better than reading alone. One study found that student motivation and interest in fluency appeared to increase during the repeated readings of song lyrics. (Patel & Laud, 2007, p. 9)
Below is an example of an outstanding choir from South Africa singing Shosholoza, which includes a lot of repetitive motives and phrases that help build fluency through singing.
Other applications include ideas for using technology for creative repetition, rather than merely repeated a song.
1. Using an electronic graphing representation of the song scrolling.
2. Using a song in diminution (double the rhythm) or augmentation (half the rhythm) along with regular tempo.
3. Listening to a choir singing with graphic representation.
4. Perform a song for an outside listener or clinician using Skype, both for practice and to gain feedback.
